Another successful Robotex Cyprus event

Another successful Robotex Cyprus event took place on the weekend of July 1st and 2nd, 2023.

The Cyprus Computer Society (CCS) successfully organized the 6th Robotex Pancyprian Robotics Competition, which was inaugurated by Philippos Hatzizacharias, the Deputy Minister of Research, Innovation, and Digital Policy. The opening ceremony was held on the morning of Saturday, July 1st, at the Sports Center of the University of Cyprus.

The event commenced with an introductory speech by Mr. Costas Agrotis, the President of CCS, who welcomed the participants on behalf of the organizers. Representatives from the co-organizers also expressed their support, including Professor Giorgos Chrysanthou from the Department of Computer Science at the University of Cyprus, Mr. Victoras Kountouris, the Youth Officer of the Youth Board, and Mr. Christos Christou, the President of IET Cyprus.

This year, Robotex Cyprus attracted 699 participants from all over Cyprus, including robotists, schoolchildren, students, and adults, who competed in 20 different challenges.

Over the course of the two-day event, hundreds of visitors, including parents, relatives, friends of the competitors, and technology enthusiasts, enjoyed exciting robotic battles and exhibitions of robotic constructions. On Saturday, July 1st, the robots navigated Line Following tracks and participated in the FOLKRACE rally, while also attempting to find their way through a maze.

On Sunday, July 2nd, the robots engaged in battles on the SUMO field, which included the brand-new 3 kg challenge. Additionally, the event featured a GIRLS FIRE-FIGHTING competition exclusively for girls, aimed at inspiring more females to pursue careers in the STEAM fields.

On the same day, the Minister of Labor and Social Insurance, Mr. Yiannis Panagiotou, visited the robotics festival and expressed his satisfaction with the projects presented by the roboticists, acknowledging them as the future scientists of the country.

Both days of Robotex Cyprus included a dedicated Educational Robotics exhibition, where primary school students showcased their robotic constructions under the theme "Robots for a Safer World."

In addition to the competition, the festival incorporated various technological and entertaining activities and shows. Visitors had the opportunity to experience drone flights presented by teachers and students from the Regional Agricultural, Technical and Vocational School of Education and Training of Famagusta/Avgorou.

There were also interactive booths where visitors enjoyed 3D printing demonstrations by Robo.com.cy, technological projects by Youth Makerspace Larnaca, prize draws by Engino, sweet surprises from IET Cyprus and Christels Designs, and other technological creations. The opening of the event was musically accompanied by drummer Yagos Pavlou from the Music Club of the University of Cyprus, while on Sunday at noon, 40 dancers from the Elena Clark School of Dance performed, offering a nice break to the intensive robotics program.

Robotex Cyprus 2023 was organized by the Cyprus Computer Society in collaboration with the University of Cyprus, the Youth Board, and IET Cyprus as co-organizers. The event was held under the auspices of the President of the Republic of Cyprus, Mr. Nicos Christodoulides, and received approval from the Ministry of Education, Sports, and Youth, as well as ETEK (Cyprus Scientific and Technical Chamber). The Ministry of Research, Innovation, and Digital Policy supported Robotex Cyprus 2023 as the Diamond Sponsor, with the Research and Innovation Foundation (IDEK) as a sponsor. Long-time partners of CCS, XM, served as the Technology Partner, and the Bank of Cyprus supported the event as the Youth Supporter

Finally, more than 85 volunteers and judges, members of the Robotex Cyprus Organizing and Scientific Committee, respectively, worked for the efficient organization of the festival.

The next stop of Robotex Cyprus is the award ceremony that will take place in September and the trip to Robotex International in Estonia that will take place on November. Cyprus has collected many international awards in the past and we wish even more distinctions and experiences in the future.
